Many cat owners want to groom their cats at home but aren’t quite sure where to start—or how to do it safely without stress, scratches, or tears (from either of you!).

Below are essential Do’s and Don’ts, shared by International Certified Master Cat Groomer, Lexie Goldsmith, who has educated cat owners around the world through professional online courses.

✅ The Do’s of At‑Home Cat Grooming

Prepare everything before you begin
Having all tools ready reduces handling time and keeps stress levels low for your cat.

Have a helper if possible
A second person can calmly support your cat and offer a wet “licky” treat to create a positive distraction.

Clip nails first
Short nails significantly reduce the risk of scratches and make the entire process safer.

Use a laundry sink with a non‑slip mat
Slipping increases fear and stress. A secure surface helps your cat feel more stable and safe.

Attach a hose or spray nozzle to the tap
This allows better control of water flow and avoids startling splashes.

Use a dryer with a nozzle
Controlled airflow helps dry efficiently while separating the undercoat.

Comb while drying
This prevents knots, reduces matting, and speeds up the drying process.

Mix the shampoo before bringing your cat to the sink
Preparation avoids delays and unnecessary handling once grooming begins.

Protect the cat’s ears and wrap them with a towel for drying
Ear protection reduces noise sensitivity, while a towel wrap helps your cat feel secure.

❌ The Don’ts of At‑Home Cat Grooming

Don’t fully submerge your cat
This can be extremely stressful and may cause your cat to panic and use their nails to escape.

Don’t apply undiluted shampoo directly to the coat
Concentrated shampoo is difficult to rinse out and can irritate the skin if not rinsed properly.

Don’t chase your cat before grooming
If your cat is already anxious, it’s best to postpone grooming to another day.

Don’t corner your cat in the bath or shower
Cats need to feel they have some control; cornering increases fear responses.

Don’t corner your cat during drying
This adds to the cat’s stress, and they will no longer trust you.

Don’t let your cat air‑dry if it can be avoided
Air‑drying can cause tangles and bacterial growth on the skin.

Don’t cut knots or mats with scissors
This is one of the most common causes of serious grooming injuries requiring surgery.

Don’t use clippers without proper training and insurance
Incorrect clipper use can cause painful injuries and long‑term trauma. Only professionals should clip your cat.
